Instructional designers play an important role in the creation from start to finish of engaging, efficient and effective e-learning experiences. As an instructional designer, you work with subject matter experts (SME) and other important stakeholders to establish the learning objectives, layout the course outline, and develop relevant content and activities.

The most widely-used instructional design model is the ADDIE model, which stands for analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

Analysis

In the first phase, you assess the needs of learners and the goals of the course to determine the best approach. This includes creating a learner profile learning objectives and target audience, as well as gathering information about learners’ prior knowledge and skills.

Design

The next phase involves creating an outline for the course, including content, activities, and assessments. You decide on instructional methods and strategies, such as lectures, discussions, or hands-on activities, and select appropriate multimedia elements, such as videos, images or simulations.

Development

Here you create the content and activities for the course using the outline as a guide. This may involve writing text, creating graphics, and developing interactive elements.

Implementation

During this phase, you ensure that the course is delivered effectively to learners. This may involve testing the course and making any necessary revisions.

Evaluation

Finally, you assess the effectiveness of the course in meeting learning objectives and making any necessary adjustments. This may involve gathering feedback from learners and conducting assessments to measure learning outcomes.

Instructional design is essential for creating high-quality e-learning experiences that meet the needs of learners and achieve desired learning outcomes. By following a systematic process, instructional designers can ensure that courses are engaging and effective.
