Overview

The client was concerned that their own technical trainers were not mindful when teaching students of different aptitudes and personalities.

This is a problem for them because training employees in new skills is an important part of keeping VOLVO competitive and productive. If trainers are not delivering teaching material properly it has long term ramifications that will damage profits for VOLVO.

After analyzing the kick-off meeting, we determined that the source of the clients’ issues was the lack of perspective in regards to students’ struggles. For this reason, we proposed a scenario-based eLearning training.

Process

Creating this project required constant analysis and alteration.  With ongoing feedback and user testing, we were able to develop a polished final version of this product.

After agreeing with the client on the style of eLearning module, (branching scenario with three different personas) we decided to begin work on the scripts for each scenario.

Script Writing

A key point we had to consider when writing the scripts, was that most of the learners were not native English speakers. Thus, we needed to keep the writing short and to the point with intermediate level vocabulary.

After getting the format down for the first script and feedback from out client, we used this skeleton format to draft out two additional scripts.

Visual Design Choices

The client made it clear at the kick off meeting, they wanted this eLearning module to look and feel like VOLVO.

The client sent us some documents and promotional material with color schemes and font typefaces they wanted us to immulate.

With these documents it was easy for us to get the look and feel of VOLVO and integrate it into the training.

Visual Prototype

After the script writing, was the visual prototype. Since our learners are not native english speakers it was important to include images with body language that matched the feeling or message with the corresponding text.

This type of expressive body language and facial expression allows the learner to infer the meaning even if they don’t completely understand the text.

Results & Takeaways

The product was well-received by the client. It was important that we kept clear communication lines throughout the process and made small changes along the way in line with the client’s feedback.

Because this was a one off project, things like long evaluation were not included by the client. To know if the training truly made a difference will take time and reinforcement. However, I am satisfied in knowing that I completed the task set out by the client.

In the beginning there were difficulties that arose from being in two different time zones. However, this was resolved as we worked in Slack to keep everything organized.
